María la del barrio (Maria of the slums) is the 3rd telenovela of Thalía from the trilogy of 'Maria'. Is a Mexican telenovela which starred Thalía, Fernando Colunga, Itatí Cantoral, Ricardo Blume, Iran Eory and the youngest actors Ludwika Paleta & Osvaldo Benavides. It was produced and broadcast on Televisa in 1995–1996.

The series is a remake of Los Ricos También Lloran, which featured Verónica Castro, Rogelio Guerra and Rocío Banquells.[1]

Plot

María Hernández is a 15-year-old scavenger who lives on the outskirts of the city. She loses her godmother, Casilda, who before dying begs the local priest not to leave María to fend for herself. The priest asks one of his benefactors, Don Fernando de la Vega, to let Maria work as a servant in his house. Instead, Don Fernando brings her in as his ward, making her a target of hostility for his wife, Victoria, and her niece, Soraya.

María falls in love with the dashing but drunken and disorderly son of the house, Luis Fernando, and must fight Soraya for his affections. When Luis Fernando and María finally get married, he walks in on an innocent embrace between María and his brother Vladimir and storms out blinded with jealousy. He does not believe María's baby is his, so when it is born, Maria gives it away during a temporary bout of insanity. Luis Fernando rescues her from an asylum and adopts another child for her, but she never loses hope of recovering the son she lost.

Luis Fernando discovers the truth, he returns and finds his wife in an asylum. Believing that his son died, Luis Fernando Tita adopts an orphaned baby. Maria agrees but does not lose the hope of finding his son.

Years later, Maria finds her son and as a teenager, and promises his adoptive mother Agrippina who picked him along with his godfather, the Veracruz to provide economic benefits to help poor people, and they were as long as this does not tell your child that Maria is actually her biological mother but to find the right time to talk the truth to Nando, meanwhile hides Maria to her husband that she is the benefactor of the family who raised her son with which Luis Fernando used to spy on his wife and realizes what happened, but Luis Fernando believes that Mary thinks it helps that Nando is his lover and gives a jealous rage against his son without knowing the reality of the situation, This adoptive mother Agrippina Nando with his friend decide to leave town and go to the family De la Vega fears that Luis Fernando will do something to the boy, trying to flee in the train station, Maria is forced to reveal to his son who she really was and Maria promised him and his adoptive mother that she will defend it from anyone trying to harm him, and soon after the situation is settled with her husband and family and other accepts Nando member.

At the time, after 15 years, Soraya suddenly returns to Mexico to take revenge against those who as she had left her to be happy, so she married a foreign billionaire named: Oscar Montalban. Soraya which murderer in a traffic accident and inherited a fortune and this was under him that his daughter Alicia was invalid, tortured and humiliated with his governess Esperanza, De la Vega family realized this situation and Alice decide to pick up his governess from the clutches of Soraya, the black widow and the living dead as he called Carlota.

Final

Soraya kidnaps Maria and brings her to an old cabin. She tells her how much she hates her, how her life has been going downhill ever since she arrived at de la Vega's mansion. They start to fight and Soraya throws Maria on the floor, causing her to lose consciousness. When Maria wakes up, she remembers everything and fights with Soraya again. When the police and Luis Fernando arrive, Soraya decides that if she can't live happily, then no one can. She sets the house on fire, but her dress catches fire and thus begins to burn her alive. Maria and Luis Fernando manage to escape from the flames and they celebrate their anniversary with grand reunion with their family and friends.
